Photo of the Day – 5 Miles High Over Snowy Canada

5 Miles Up Over Snowy Canada

In a bold new step, I’m setting the goal of posting a photo every day. It shouldn’t be too hard, I’ve taken over 5,000 photos in the last few months.

This shot was from the window seat of Northwest Flight 318 from Nagoya Japan to Detroit. It was the long leg of the trip from Manila to Orlando and eventually to home in Ormond Beach Florida.

I saw these patterns in the snow and pulled out my Olympus Stylus Tough 6000. I carry this camera with me wherever I go. It’s obviously pretty cold there. The shot was taken just after sunrise, that’s why we can see good definition in the snow formations. When the sun is low, it allows us to see things in photos that just are not visible when the sun is high in the sky.

Photographers call this time the golden hour. It’s the time just before and after sunrise and sunset when the sun is low in the sky. Many landscape photographers shoot only during those hours.

I use the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 for everyday shots. When I need higher quality images, I use the Olympus E-520 with 4 different lenses, multiple flash guns and lots of accessories. The Tough camera is waterproof and shockproof. I use it when I’m on the beach because sand and water would kill the E-520.

Photo Information: 1/125s, f/3.5, ISO 50, 7.6mm
