Photo of the Day – Florida Sunrise of Flagler Beach

On this early morning on the beach in Flagler Beach Florida, I was greeted with spectacular blue skys and cool temperatures.

Autumn is a great time of year in Florida. It’s cool enough to spend hours on the beach in the morning.  The summers are just too hot to spend too much time for a fair-skinned Irishman.

Florida Sunrise November 2009

On this cool late November morning, I set out an hour before sunrise to get some photos. I was just back from another Asian trip and needed to get out an reacquaint myself with why I live here. I started by the estuaries by the Halifax River and then headed over to the beach. I’ll post some of those photos later in the week.

This shot is about 1/2 mile south of Flagler Beach pier. It’s a really nice, uncrowded, quiet stretch of beach. About five years ago, we lived on the ocean about 6 miles south of this location. I love the unspoiled nature of the beach along this stretch. Sometimes it seems timeless.

The difficulty with a photo of this type is that the sun causes exposure problems. The shutter speed was set to combat the sun with the hope that the rest of the photo wouldn’t be too dark. The shutter speed is pretty fast – 1/4000 sec. I kept the aperture wide because I didn’t want it to be super sharp. I wasn’t seeing sharp with the sun in my eyes.

This is the day that sent me to look for a camera that wouldn’t be damaged by the beach. It was pretty calm and the sand on this beach was not blowing, but further south, there’s a lot of white sand that would destroy my Olympus E-520. I bought the waterproof sealed Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 later that day. I will be going back to Flagler Beach to see how that camera will deal with the exposure.

Photo Details: Olympus E-520, 1/4000 sec., f/3.5, ISO 100, 14.0 mm (14-42mm lens).
